We finished off the week with our STEM challenge where we used a variety of colours, textures and shapes to create 'something special". The criteria was that they must have used at least 5 different pieces. These pieces must work together to create something special. There were some wonderful creations which can been seen in the slide show below.
Harmony Day celebrates Australia's cultural diversity. It's about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Harmony Week in Kindergarten saw us get an insight into Japan, Korea, Egypt and Aboriginal Australia. We read the story Suki's Kimono, about a girl in Japan and painted kimonos with watercolours; we watched a video message from Mrs West's friend Demi, in Korea and she read us a story in Korean; we made our very own Egyptian musical instrument, a sistrum, from forked sticks, wire and buttons and acted out the Aboriginal Dreaming story of How the Birds Got their Colours. Our assembly featured the song "We are Australian" which reinforces the cultural diversity in Australia along with a strong sense of belonging. An Upstander is a person who stands up to bullies by using any of 4 UPstanding options. 1. Be a Buddy - Go and stand with the person who is the target of the bullying so they know they have a friend. 2. Interrupt- Ask the person who is the target of the bully to come and play. This gives them the opportunity to walk away from the situation. 3. Speak Out- Tell the bully to "Stop!" or tell them " You are being mean." 4. Tell an adult - this is not 'telling tales' this is helping to keep someone safe. We also discussed the difference between 'conflict' and 'bullyng'. Conflict is a disagreement or a difference of opinion. Bullying is :- 1.Repeated 2. Intended to hurt;- either physically or emotionally. 3. The bully is perceived (by the target of the bullying) to have more power. eg. bigger, older, part of a bigger group. We discussed and drew the 4 UPstanding options to deal with bullies. On Friday we had a special STEM session to celebrate becoming UPstanders as it was a National Day Against Bullying. We coloured and cut out the characters from the NED UPstander video and then investigated different features that help objects to stand up. The STEM challenge was to make the UPstander characters stand up. At the end of the lesson we listened to the 2017 Kindies sing the song they created called UPstanders YEAH! This song features on our school website. Please see the videos below to view these resources. Scroll down further to see a slideshow of our work. We have been investigating the language in popular nursery rhymes including the rhyme, Hickory, Dickory, Dock. The STEM challenge associated with the nursery rhyme was to create a clock. The criteria were that the clock must have a face, it must stand up and it must be strong enough to support the weight of a soft toy. It was wonderful to see the students are already becoming great problem solvers and are able to modify their designs if their initial attempt doesn't meet the criteria. Please enjoy the slideshow below. Thank you to everyone who managed to come along and join us on Wednesday to make pizzas. The weather turned out to be beautiful and we had a very pleasant afternoon creating and eating delicious pizzas. It was lovely to meet you all and to have time to chat. Thanks you to Marcella Levey from NSW Health for bringing a lovely fruit platter to share and for her display about healthy lunches. A huge thank you to our SLSO, Tim McDonald for getting the pizza oven nice and hot and for cooking the pizzas. We hope you all enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did.
The children had a great lead up to our pizza evening - through maths! We measured ingredients and looked at the concept of change when making some dough... and we used 2D shapes to create our own paper pizza, and pattern blocks in some huge hoop pizzas! They looked delicious! |
